The Department of Biology at the University of Oregon offers expertise and research opportunities in a wide range of disciplines including neuroscience, genetics, cell and developmental biology, evolution, ecology, and marine biology. New directions in biological research especially from the discovery of the structure of DNA in 1953, as well as new techniques made available in sciences like biochemistry and genetics were at first only slowly integrated by evolutionary biology. Biology pre-health students and others from UNC traveled to Spain over the summer to gain clinical hours, cherished memories and insights from physicians on what it truly means to be a healthcare professional.
You’ll get comprehensive training of practical skills in microbiology including sound technique and lab practices for the safe handling of category 2 microorganisms. The Biology majors can be used as preparation for graduate school or professional careers in technical fields, the health sciences and education. This field has become increasingly important in recent years, and requires students to develop significant mathematical and computer science nous, much like the interdisciplinary field of bioinformatics, which involves developing and improving on methods for storing, retrieving, organizing and analyzing biological data and developing software tools to generate useful biological knowledge.

Biological science as done in the laboratory is so much more complicated than Wason’s test systems that it’s certainly fair to question the relevance of simple card tricks played on unsuspecting undergraduate students on what educated people in white coats do in the lab.
Four unifying principles form the foundation of modern biology: cell theory, evolution, genetics and homeostasis. Students who study the biological sciences will be able to pursue many career avenues particularly within research, teaching, sales and in field work roles. Evolution is the change over time that is the engine of biological diversity. Whatever the initial tension between the two disciplines, newer methods and critical insights made their way into evolutionary biology leading to a new area of research traveling under the new banner of molecular evolution.
